Baytril for Dogs
Baytril for dogs is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in pets, mostly in dogs, although it can also be used in the treatment of cats and rabbits, among other pets. It can be used to treat skin infections, infections of the lungs, respiratory tract or from wounds and even prevention of infection during surgical operation.
Baytril (enrofloxicine) is manufactured by veterinary division of Bayer. It is an antibacterial broad spectrum floroquinolone for the treatment of canine bacterial infections. Since baytril kills bacteria, it can be used to cure or prevent as many other infections as there are.
Effective use of baytril for dogs
Baytril for dogs has been proven effective in the treatment and prevention of various infections caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi thus, it is commonly prescribed by veterinarians. Administration of the medicine that comes in tablet form is very hard since dogs do not want to take pills and eventually spit them out, just like little kids.
Therefore, giving them the baytril in pill form requires the pet owner to have as much patience as he could have. He may need to do some tricks just to fool the dog and make it appear that it is not taking any medicine.
Likewise, Baytril is available in injectables and chewable tablets recommended by veterinarians for the treatment of canine respiratory, urinary tract, e-coli and dermal staph infections.
There are various uses for baytril for dogs and they all involve killing off bacteria and fighting infections. The medicine muddles with the DNA which is one of the basic cells building blocks and interrupts the cells of the bacteria for them break and die.
Baytril for dogs was banned but not for use in all animals. It was banned for being used only in animals that are later eaten by humans such as fouls like chickens and turkeys, among others. Such banning was made to protect humans since some bacteria develop immunity to certain types of medicines and it may be possible to pass them on to those who eat undercooked meat.
Bacteria run to escape attack of various antibiotics; mutate to survive; and create more resistance over time. The tendency is for manufacturers to modify and strengthen the drug to create a more effective cure and fight the resistant bacteria. No problem is caused if the bacteria stay in an animal that will not be butchered for human consumption. Thus, baytril was banned so as not to allow the modified bacteria to be passed on to humans.
Side Effects of baytril for dogs?
Generally, pets taking baytril for dogs may experience diarrhea or liquid stool and minor joint problems especially in young puppies. More serious side effects include blindness in certain small breed dogs, mood changes or even seizures. The serious effects of baytril for dogs are very rare and the administration of the medicine must be discontinued if these signs are noted.
Baytril is not recommended to puppies less than one year for cartilage and joint damages in using the medicine on growing dogs under the age of one year.
