Revolution for Cats

Revolution for cats is the brand name for selamectin; manufactured and distributed by Pfizer Company. It is the only topical medicine approved drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of different kinds of parasites for cats.

Revolution for cats is a topical medicine used for the protection of cats from various parasites like heartworms, fleas and mange and ear mites. It can also be used for the treatment of roundworms and hookworms as it is effective in fighting both internal and external parasites.

The topical medicine is water resistant thus, the effectiveness of Revolution for cats is not weakened even if the cat is bathed or allowed to swim two hours after its application. It kills adult fleas and prevents the flea eggs and larvae from hatching. It can also kill ear mites and heartworms, including the destruction of all larvae to control the pests overgrowing population and remains effective 30 days after application for a month-long protection.

Indication, dosage and administration of Revolution for Cats

Revolution for CatsTopical administration of Revolution for cats is only once a month. Administration of the product to kittens less than 8 weeks is not advisable without a prescription from the licensed veterinarian. Medical researches showed that the medication is safe even for pregnant cats and kittens of 8 weeks or older provided they weigh more than 5 pounds.

Revolution for cats that comes in 45mg/0-75ml can be properly administered to cats weighing 5.1 to 15 pounds; and that which comes in 60mg/1ml can be given to those weighing 15.1 to 22 pounds. It must be kept in mind that use of this topical medicine is not advisable if other heartworm medication is being administered on the cat. It should only be used when the next dosage of heartworm medication is due to avoid complications and other health problems to your cat.

Revolution should be applied between shoulders at the back of the neck, squeezing the tube into the cats skin. The topical solution dries quickly to promote immediate absorption of the medicine and to avoid contaminating the people cuddling the cat.

Side effects of Revolution for Cats

The use of Revolution for cats may cause stomach upset in rare cases; and may cause allergic reaction as well thus, it is not recommended for a sick, weak and underweight cat as it may bring more harm than good. Although proven safe, there are isolated cases where temporary hair loss on the area where the product is applied is noted. Likewise, muscle tremor, rapid breathing, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, increased heart rate were noted reactions on cats with weak immune systems.

Revolution for cats may also cause allergic reaction and irritation on the humans skin and eyes thus care should be taken when applying the solution to the cat. Proper washing of hands is necessary after administering revolution on your cats to avoid such harmful effects.

A healthy cat is a cat free from internal and external parasitic infection. And cats free from parasites means a healthy environment for other pets, yourself and the family especially your kids who love to cuddle them.
